The word entertainment comes from the Latin inter tenere and is derived from the Indo-European root ten. It means to hold inside. It was used for the rites, parties and non secular pageants in medieval times. It was also used for the art of satire, and later as a form of high-brow growth.
The reason for the popularity of this form of entertainment is that it hits on points which the human brain was evolved to understand deeply. For example backstabbing or murders which are common in the social world of humans.
