Entertaiment can be found in a wide range of forms from the everyday pleasures of watching television or solving a crossword to more public and social activities such as ceremonies, celebrations, religious festivals, or satire. Entertainments may have a serious or light-hearted intention but one of the main aspects that distinguishes them from other kinds of activity is their ability to be adapted for any scale, from an individual choice made by a private person to a large-scale performance intended for a global audience.
The word entertain is derived from the Latin intertenere, which means to hold inside, or more precisely, to keep inside or hold in. Its dictionary definition is an agreeable occupation of the mind; a diversion or amusement: “a show put on for the enjoyment or amusement of others.” (Oliver and Barstsch, 2010).
